Problem solved. Although the power light (physical LED on laptop) was
illuminated, replacing the mains adapter solved the problem. Evidently
not a software issue but a problem with the output (power? voltage?) of
the mains adapter sufficient for the LED to illuminate but not in fact
sufficie
I rebooted the machine picking an earlier kernel from the list. The
software power indicator does work under this condition, showing both
the mains connection and the remaining run time from the battery (state
of charge). In all cases, the mains indicator from the power adapter at
the laptop
I just updated to the current SL7 security via yumex on both a
workstation (mains only) and a laptop (internal battery, mains adapter)
Kernel 3.10.0-327.36.1.el7.x86_64 -- all yumex update recommended RPMs
were installed.
