Problem solved. Although the power light (physical LED on laptop) was
illuminated, replacing the mains adapter solved the problem. Evidently
not a software issue but a problem with the output (power? voltage?) of
the mains adapter sufficient for the LED to illuminate but not in fact
sufficient to power the laptop. Apologies for the extra traffic.

Both MATE PowerManager 1.14.0 and GKrellM 2.3.5 report no mains
adapter and 83 percent remaining in the battery for 10 hours 30
minutes -- this started after the above update. The amount of battery
time is very far off -- it really should be about 2 hours.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix/workaround?
