Some 64 bit kernel / bios combinations have problems with >= 4 Gb of memory. If you have that, try it with only 2 Gb of memory installed. If this is your problem, try playing with memory mapping bios settings. In my case, I ran into it with an Intel DQ965GFE motherboard after a bios upgrade. Roe

Thanks again John, and Stephen. In the end I rewrote the java command to point to 1.6.0 instead of 1.4.2. One thing that wrongfooted me is that 1.4.2 is in /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.4.2. but 1.6.0 is in /usr/java/ I'll keep the salt standing by. NDI _
