I've seen the original release of Buckaroo Banzai about dozen times, but this is the first time I have had the pleasure of watching "Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th dimension," this is the director's cut of the movie with additional footage that was added in.
One of the key additions to this version of the film was 2 1/2 minutes of back story that explained Buckaroo's origins and how his parents died during the early experimental days of the "overthruster." We also learn of the how Buckaroo got his name and that he is biracial. (Father Japanese, Mom White) The build up to him driving the car was also a lot slower than the theatrical release. We do not actually see Buckaroo's face until after he has driving the truck through the mountain. The rest of the clips are additional minute sized clips that were probably removed for pacing. Basically 99% of the movie was unchanged. However, there are extra scenes on the 2002 dvd release that were removed for continuity. One small error I spotted in the film was the explanation about how the aliens could fool humans into thinking that they looked like humans. The aliens used a bacteria that brainwashed humans into thinking that the aliens were human, but in the scenes with the president, the president had no way of being exposed to the bacteria so he should have seen only an alien. Overall the re-release offers some crisp visuals and excellent sound for the fan boys and girls out there. -- Celebrating 10 years of bringing diversity to perversity!
