Also, What was William Marshall's connection with Java? Specifically
with Mrs. Major L. Stewart (of the Island of Java) and Major L.
Stewart of the Island of Java. Who were they? Any ideas? I have the
tunes, just interested in the background. >>

Can't help with Miss Dumbreck, but can with the other question. From the

MAJOR L. STEWART'S REEL--OF THE ISLAND OF JAVA. Scottish, Reel. G Major.
Standard. AB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833) in honor of Major
Ludovick Stewart (1782-1848), of the 24th Regiment of Foot. Major Stewart
served in Java and in Bombay, India, where he met and married Margaret Fraser
of Newton near Ceauly, Inverness. Marshall knew them through his friendship
with the Stewart family, who had lived at the farm of Keithmore prior to
Marshall and his family. They remained friends when the Stewarts moved on to
Pittyvaich (Cowie, The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999). See also
the companion tune "Mrs. Major L. Stewart of the Island of Java." Marshall,
Fiddlecase Edition, 1978; 1822 Collection, pg. 42.

MRS. MAJOR L. STEWART OF THE ISLAND OF JAVA. Scottish, Slow Strathspey. A
Major. Standard. AB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). A Scottish
fiddler and composer, Marshall is most famous for his many fine strathspeys.
Marshall worked for much of his life for the Duke of Gordon as the Steward of
his Household, and it is fortunate that the Duke was an enthusiastic
supporter and patron of Marshall's music. The Mrs. of the title was Margaret
Fraser of Newton near Beauly, who married Ludovick Stewart of Pittyvaich.
Stweart was a Major in the 24th Regiment of Foot (the South Wales Borderers),
serving in India and the Island of Java (Cowie, The Life and Times of William
Marshall, 1999). Source for notated version: Winston Fitzgerald (1914-1987)
