I've heard the "Orain a Mhaigdean Mhara" (Lament of the Mermaid) a few
times recently, and I think the reason is that it's been reprinted in
an easily accessible book. Anybody know what?

The tune seems to me to be related to the ground of the piobaireachd
"The Lament for the Union", supposedly the only old piobaireachd
written by a Lowlander, the piper to James VI, who composed it in 1603
when the court (and his job) went south. I guess it is just possible
for him to have allegorized his position as that of a jilted mermaid...
