Many thanks to all who replied. This is very useful information. It is actually
the print book
formatting that mainly concerns me, as ebook formatting isn't that hard. I
simply convert the doc to
html, then make mobi and epub files in Calibre, to get an idea what it looks
like before uploading

For me Scribus is wonderful. I created a 180 page technical training
manual and it worked really well. I haven't upgraded to the latest
version yet, I use 1.4.6. I just had to make sure I saved frequently.
But I did that with MS Word which couldn't begin to do what Scribus can.
And to me, Libre
Having looked at the price of InDesign & reeled in shock, I looked for an
alternative. Scribus looks
great. I already use Apache OpenOffice, so I'm used to Open Source software.
What I'm looking to learn to do is format books for ebook & paperback editions.
I don't really fancy
doing it on the C
I made a 196 page book[1] in Scribus 1.4.6, I had to split it into 10
documents to be manageable after several crashes.
