Eric,

A few years ago, I had a similar problem with an '86 GLHT. I replaced
the in-tank fuel pump first, but it still had the problem. Replacing
the external pump did the trick.

These are both factory pumps. The in-tank pump is a low-pressure pump.
The external pump is a high-pressure pump. The factory upgrade is to
replace both with a high-pressure in-tank pump, which is what the
factory used on the '87 Shelby Charger and '87 GLHS. A fuel pressure
gauge is a big help in diagnosing this problem.

That external pump is subject to a lot of heat. On a 95+ degree day, I
managed to limp it into a Pep Boys and replaced several items: including
the ignition coil and the Hall-Effect unit. The following day I was
able to drive it home (85 miles) in the cool of the morning. My wife
did a lot of driving in shuttling me back and forth.

Subject: SD> '86 GLHT possible vapor lock

I am the original owner of an '86 GLHT, ... When the car is hot and
the weather is warm to hot, car running for 45 minutes, all speeds. Shut
off, parked for 5 minutes, restarted and drove for another 5 miles. Then
it started loosing power, and the engine dies. Just like it ran out of
gas but it didn't. If you set there for 5 minutes and try to start it it
may run, but not well and the fuel mixture gauge reads LEAN. Set for
another 10 minutes and then ... During this time the fuel mixture reads
rich like it usually does when operating normal at idle.

... there are a lot of original parts on this car. It even has the
recall / service bulletin where they have changed/ added (I don't
remember now) where there is a secondary pump outside of the tank ( This
was to fix the buzzing sound w/less than 1/4 tank).

I am open to your input,
