I am going out a limb here, but did you check to see if the distirbutor is even rotating when the engine is cranking? If the timing belt took a dive, or the keyway sheared on the sprocket, or if the tang on the distributior sheared, or the roll pin on the oil pump drive gear sheared, the distirutor is likely not spinning. Had this happen and spent ALOT of time trying different things before checking this basic.
