Roland, I strongly suggest you just approach this with /etc/skel and
try to deal with the other problems in a different way.
Changing defaults for existing users through an update is horrid, I
understand the situation you are in, but you have a way out of it that
you can use on your own.

installation have a chance to get the "new" defaults found /etc/skel
automatically.

If we just add all of the changes and functionality of less to more, I
don't see the point of having both :)

have a hard time believing this. Almost any time I've
logged in or out of GNOME I find many little files littering /tmp or
/var/tmp from orbit, ice, sockets, etc.

experience, my PATH and MANPATH are fairly close to being identical. I
was always annoyed that I had to set both. To me, this perfectly fits
the whole serendipitous discovery conversation that occurred recently.
