I had the same problem personally. I built a Dynacraft 17 degree, Hybrid 2.
This one is built on a .370 shaft. I kept topping it until I moved it
forward in my stance, similar to a driver. Now I can hit it low and boring,
210-225 yds.

My advice is to have them hit 6- or 7-irons, then swap to the hybrid. A
hybrid seems to work best when hit like an iron vs. a FW metal - more of a
descending blow than a sweep. The sweep (FW) swing seems to produce the
topped shot.
