Thanks for the response, that was my first response to the problem.
The problem that I'm having is that I can't find any trace of a
connection attempt in either my mail server log nor in my shorewall
log. If the connection is being made to my fire wall I can't figure out
how to

Do you have a AT or Bellsouth email address? If you do, or know
someone who does, check out the email header.
I've found in the past that it is a good source for debugging.
