Hm... Try using mpg123, some windows made mp3's have headers that linux
cant play correctly.

I'd try re-configging and making the x11amp application that's playing
the mp3 in the new environment.
If that's not it I'm going to have to hand this one off to
someone else, I don't use a soundcard on my linux box.

some odd reason, when I try to play mp3's, it plays for one or two seconds, then
