you might also want to pick up the ORA gnu emacs book, i was thumbing
through it during the desert books gathering and considered buying it.
i'm sure it'll tell you everything you need to know about emacs, and more.

Also I want it to color code my source files but have diff
In emacs, whenever I modify a file, after the first key-stroke I always
get:
While opening UTMP file: no such file or directory
Everything still works. It still saves correctly. Why do I get this
message? Thx.
