How do you invoke X?
The X server needs to run as a user who owns the console, so either xdm
(or equivalent) is running as root or the startx chain of scripts has a
setuid script in it to change the ownership of the console to the user
trying to start the X server. Your scripts might be broken.

Its pretty well done, covers the basics. You need to have some working
knowledge of what kind of hardware you have though.
