I ask my accountant and legal firm for an estimation before they begin work.
Gives me a basis to control costs and makes them think twice if they think
about over billing for the same matter.

+1 for any recent recommendations of accountants for startups.
We're wasting time and energy with a mid-sized firm that doesn't
understand the needs of a startup. Currently looking for alternatives

In my experience accountants (and lawyers) tend to act on the assumption that
anything they spend time on is billable AND that they don't need to remind you
of this (ever). It's always puzzled me as we could never get away with charging
our clients on such a basis.
