When looking overseas for comparison we should remember that the industry in
Australia is quite young, we had no startups in the 70's.
There is no allure to work for pennies with the promise of unknown gain if you

Good point - similar things happened in Finland (with Nokia) and
Sweden (with Ericsson).
Of course, it's very hard to get things off the ground without money
(a key issue in Australia).

I think it all misses the point as soon as you try to sum things up in
a top-down way. The way to build a community is block by block and the
only really thing that matters is that successful companies get built
with a certain culture which then spawn other startups. Also those
type of companies do
What I find most interesting in Australia is the difference in
perception between entrepreneurial activity in mining and the IT
sector.
You find an interesting patch of dirt out near Bendigo, and you'll
soon find someone to spot you a lazy million (or so) to go dig it up -
