Why complicate life: the visa waiver is three months long and they'll let you on a second time. The next best thing is the B visa.  Living for under a year you won't be a enough to develop a credit rating which is just as much of a pain as not getting a social security number.  Since you only

Yes, the EAD can take a while. For my wife it took 5 months because we had to start over due to clerical errors. It can be frustrating. It is a commitment. Some people get it in a couple months. Note that you can't get start your EAD process until you get your social security number which also
