I was told the same when I picked up my SSN (which took about 3 working
days). They said my wife can't get an SSN until she has her EAD.
I had no issues with getting an AT&T mobile phone.
I agree that its just not worth getting an E3 for a short visit and getting
your application rejected is n

Why complicate life: the visa waiver is three months long and they'll let you
on a second time. The next best thing is the B visa.
Living for under a year you won't be a enough to develop a credit rating which
is just as much of a pain as not getting a social security number.
