The notion of 'habit discontinuity' in the linked article agrees with my experience. In 2004, I quit smoking. I had quit multiple times before, but it didn't stick. I am convinced that the key reason this time around was the fact that I had just changed jobs and so was in the process of figuring out (inter alia) a new workday routine - and could therefore incorporate changes such as NOT stepping out for a cigarette at 11am and 2pm.
