Borax and water is *very* good for cutting down toxicity of some
things, I don't know why. Vinegar and water is good for some molds, but
borax will cut chemicals and kill mold and insects too. If you get more
molds growing from the damp carpeting, it could make the problem worse.

If you have a good hepa filter air cleaner, that will help also, esp if
it has a charcoal prefilter that is changable. The charcoal will help
trap the organic fumes that the regular filter will miss, and not just
shoot it out of the air to fall on the floor.

The only thing I know that would be helpful would be an electrostatic
air cleaner or air ionizer. That should remove virtually all the smoke
from an area pretty quickly.
