http://www.abc.net.au/tv/secondopinion/ takes you to a page about a programme on Australian TV this evening called Second Opinion. It is about Buteyko, a five day course to change the way you breathe. "The name Buteyko comes from name of the Russian doctor who developed the technique in Russia back in the 1950s. Buteyko is a form of breathing restraint that aims to deliver immediate and sustained improvement. It is the carbon dioxide level in the lungs which determines the release of oxygen from the haemoglobin in our blood. The more carbon dioxide in the lungs, the greater the release of oxygen to our cells and tissues. Therefore by teaching ourselves to breathe 'less', dysfunctional breathing is corrected. . . . His brother had taken a Buteyko course a few years earlier and insisted that David enrol in the course. He struggled with the exercises at first and was sceptical for a while but he started to sleep solidly during the night. He tried to keep practising the exercises but gradually they dwindled off. He still does practise in the car though. The techniques David learnt have done the trick - he returned the sleep apnoea machine and cancelled the appointment for a surgical consult." etc http://www.abc.net.au/tv/secondopinion/txt/s1446689.htm
Here are some sites I googled: http://www.buteyko.net/cdsleepapnoea.shtml http://www.buteyko.com.au/ http://www.buteyko.info/index.asp The Buteyko Institute Method of breathing retraining (BIM) successfully reduces overbreathing (hyperventilation) and normal sleep patterns return. Physiologically, hyperventilation lowers the arterial and alveolar carbon dioxide (CO2) to the point where the breathing reflex is depressed -interpreted as an apnoea or hypopnoea to an observer. A hypopnea is when breathing is reduced by 50% or more. During cessation of breathing (apnoea) the CO2 slowly accumulates until it triggers the body to take the next breath. By correcting the breathing pattern the body no longer needs to suppress the breathing reflex as the CO2 level is maintained within normal limits.
