They are from the forest run-off of dead plant and
animal matter, brought in by the rivers, flowing into
the Great Salt Lake.

Synthetic fertilzers also kill the beneficial microbes in the soil. Best
to use compost and natural sources like manure teas, feed the organisms
with molasses etc.
