If you use part of a previous batch to seed the next, making 4
quarts is actually faster
than making a gallon. Any batch can be 'topped off' with more water to
replace what you
used and run up to PPM again, pretty quick.
I was reading a thread that mentioned seeding to shorten the time to
up to a quarter of the previous batch...the more, the faster.
How much faster depends on water quality.
Great water is a lot slower to get going, not so great/ somewhat
contaminated is much faster.
Which is what you are doing...making great water not so great .by
contaminating it with
**I** wouldn't do that, but really... wathca got ta loose but a bit of

i recently found a couple gallon wide-mouth jars, and made a couple gallon
batchs with my colloid master, seeding the startup with less than 2 oz of a
previous batch that was about 60uS. it took about 8 hours to make them, one
at about 36uS, the other at about 25uS. these were quite clear, and
Instead of using salt or soda to *spike* your
CS-brewing process, just use some CS from a previous
batch.
If you use 1/4 CS to 3/4 DW, you will reduce your
brewing time by 2/3.

Valerie,
This is an example of the superstition that arises
concerning CS. No one has provided ANY evidence that
you can do anything to make CS dangerous using water
that doesn't have a toxic substance already in it.
(Yes, chlorine is toxic.)
Regular spring, well, river or tap water
Valerie,
Also (I sent too soon), if you use 20-25% pre-made CS
as a starter, you are only doing what an hour of
brewing would do, but you are saving that hour.
I use 1/4 CS + 3/4 DW, and it reduces the brewing time
by 2/3.
