It looks like the problem has been found and fixed. Thanks to everyone who responded to my information requests. With your help the exact nature of the situation became clear and led Eskimo staff to the solution.

The /tmp directory was not given the proper permissions so the list server software could not write its output to a temporary file to be picked up by the sendmail utility.
