If all you're wanting to do is simply telnet into the VAX...
Assuming a recent Linux kernel
Bridge devices, and veth type devices will work wonders to get the VAX on
the LAN.

Has Oracle changed its position with regards to patch availability for
the freely available downloads of Solaris x86?
Last I heard, patches were not available with out a support contract.
( Granted, HP is no better with its position towards VMS patches, but
at least (last I checked) VMS wasn't te
tiffcp works much better for myself as well, and gives me (relatively)
complete control over the process with a reasonably straight forward
command line.
I scan at 300 & sometimes 600dpi. ImageMagick likes to run out of
memory at those resolutions.

I stumbled across a vaguely useful trick to do my SIMH network, that,
doesn't involve a 2nd physical network interface, nor does it involve
a 2nd level user-land process. (aka: taptap)
# ip link add name veth0 type veth peer name veth1
# ifconfig veth0 up
# ifconfig veth1 up

They're both stock distro kernels, I've not tweaked anything.
I would think
login
password in an expect script, and that I'd rather not do. And most of
the other "obvious" methods using SSH keys fail the "house of cards"
test.
