We generally use two different scenarios. Both use encryption/client
certificate authentication thus eliminating the need for usernames and
passwords.

I use openVPN almost exclusively. Works great, but the only drawback I have
found so far is that is no good way to do dhcp-relay. If this were
possible, it would make the remote phone setup trivial. If anyone has or
knows a way to do this, I'd love to hear about it.

Yup. I'm pleased as punch with ALIX.2D3 boards running Vyatta VC 5.02

calls over OpenVPN, provides some QOS and acts as a general internet
firewall/nat router. Even supports VLANs. If you want, you can also run

It's a common misnomer on this list to refer to version '4.02'
Is anyone using OpenVPN for remote phone users?

I purchased the book last week - it's a great way to show some of the naysayers
that open source is a valid option...

Strictly speaking, you are running version "4.0.2", which is a
sub-version of the "4.0" family.

Oh no!!! We bought the PDF and I'm wanting to buy the book too but now, I don't
know :).
Ya, it's a very useful book by someone who has a lot
On page 227 of the book "Building Enterprise Ready Telephony Systems
with sipXecs 4.0" the bullet point "Utilizing the conference service"
the word conference is misspelled as "cnference"
Just thought you should know.
FYI everyone should buy this book. It really is a great resource.

I just happened upon this URL:

It looks like there should be a checkbox labeled 'shared' somewhere on
the main users screen if you are running 4.02 (which I am) that allows
you to setup a user as a shared user (and allow you to put the

HI all,
I use 4.0.2 from iso.
I encountered the problem that every time I click "System->
Servers->Services" page, the UI "hangs" for a minute or two, then works ok.
Here is what "top" shows (I have dual core xeon 2.33GHz):
top - 12:14:49 up 17 days, 22:34, 3 users, load average: 0.47, 0.3
I noticed exactly the same problem in 4.0.2 when restarting the whole

I voted for XX-4869.

I think your best bet would be to simply replace the system with a
modern installation of SipXecs. The latest stable ISO version (4.0.2)
would be the one you want. Unlike SCS, SipXecs is professional quality
open source freeware. You just download the ISO file, burn it to CD,
