I confirm that it built fine on a newer machine. I also agree that it looks
like a localised hardware issue. I will take it from here.

Is that repeatable? Does it always fail in the same place with the same
error me
I'm not familiar with that error. It works for me with Slackware64 full
install. Trying to google the error message didn't pull up much
information.
