Fedora will load the module the first time the interface is referenced
as it has a entry in /etc/modprobe.conf for each interface, for example:

laptop with realtek 10/100 LAN. No problems with any of them.
Running/have run MintLinux, DreamLinux, Ubuntu/Kubuntu 6.06 to ( today)
8.04 beta, plus various other distros (tinyme, minime,pupy, RedHat etc)
