[SLUG] backup using rsync and file permission

and GID comes up as numbers. Does the 2 machines require the the same /etc/passwd file, and its shadow ?? What is the best way to manage this ?? Also, is there any way to rsync the whole file system ?? so I don't have to set 20 different paths in the rsyncd.conf.
