[SLUG] backup using rsync and file permission

and GID comes up as numbers. Does the 2 machines require the the same /etc/passwd file, and its shadow ?? What is the best way to manage this ?? Also, is there any way to rsync the whole file system ?? so I don't have to set 20 different paths in the rsyncd.conf.

would you recommend the following then... say you have 3 or 4 old systems after a major LAN upgrade, you can either spend the time building each box OR use FreeNAS, configure one USB, then replicate it to a few spare USB. When you need a new NAS, put one of this in, change bios to boot from US
