Thanks - ffmpeg does install and works thanks (though I haven't yet tried to 
play in most people's environment).  In fact synaptic might have been enough
 - I haven't used it before and it found and fixed a stack of broken rpm 
dependencies.

You could check out ffmpeg (available via Synaptic Package Manager) to do the 
conversion (MPEG2 to DivX) and K3B to do the burning.

I have used ffmpeg for other conversions. I'd be interested to hear whether it 
does your job.
