Tar doesn't compress at all - if you want to compress a tar archive
you have to pipe through gzip or something similar *prior* to writin

I couldn't figure out how to do it via the Archive feature on the
Gnome/Ubuntu desktop.
Can anyone recommend a package or the command to do this with zip, tar?
