Paul Haddon and Terry Collins posted good detailed info re:Digital Video. I have done alot of Digital Video with Premiere on W$. Back then using a AMDK6400, 128ram and 20GB drive. Was pretty successful but mostly resulting in in fairly low res mpeg movies, some can be found at: http://allshookup.org/mpgvideo/mpegvideo.htm Now a Linux user I am hoping to run Video on a Linux box sometime in the future when I get the current line of work under control. An good article in Linux Journal Jan 2001 about "Broadcast 2000" (Linux App) is a pretty good intro into the highs and lows of video editing with Linux. Im sure if you search +Linux +Journal +Video you are likely to find the article. >From experience a good video card is worthwhile but $$$. Important to research video card drivers for linux unless you want to attempt to write one (Search sourceforge.net for generic firewire card drivers) A fire wire card is the go and affordable these days, firewire captures well and you can print to dv stream mastering back to digital camcorder. You then make copies to VHS from camera unless you have a card with RCA outputs to VCR. IMPORTANT to research what kind of capture settings you need, I think from memory full screen digital video is something like 768x576 pixels (check this). Analogue video is something 320x240 pixels...
