I was installing. last thing before this it set VGA16 as default.
when it does manage to start x it locks the system up, the only way out
is to cut the power.
cat didn't work last night, unless I did somthing wrong. the particular
readme's are .gz .does that make a difference?

Yeah, .gz files need to be read with either zcat or zless (or you could
manually pipe the file through

AFAIK it doesn't touch the file itself at all, it just unzips
internally.

I've just run xf86config again, everything is set much as it is for RH
(and windoze) on the same box

You should try running X-windows as non-root user.
