I have strange dialup internet problem. I run Debian unstable, I use
wvdial, and my main browser is Firbird but I also use Dillo. I use a
normal 56k external modem. I keep my computer running all the time and
use wvdial to connect to the net when I need to.

At this point I don't have a clear idea of the problem, I know the
problem though. Next time it happens try to run
/sbin/ifconfig
also try
ping www.gelato.unsw.edu.au
then
ping 129.94.173.27
if the first ping fails but the second succeeds then there is a
problem with name resolution
