Answering my own question, in case other's are in the same boat.
I've solved the problem by commenting out the error checking from vmware-config.pl at line 925 in my version. Starting at the following lines;
# We found a valid page offset
# if (not (lc($header_page_offset) eq lc($gSystem{'page_offset'}))) {
...Oh, I also downloaded vmware-any-any-update79.tar.gz from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/ as well. (thanks Dave)
The modules compiled up no problems and now I have vmware 2.0 running on Fedora Core 2 :-)
