QuickCal is worth a read of their site and forums.
It really is pretty competent at long entries as far as I've found.
Keep trying.

My macbook pro was working on a huge spreadsheet yesterday and just locked
up. i waited and waited and ten did te press 'on' button for 6 seconds then
fired it back up.
