The people who run the Backblaze backup system, with around 25,000 hard
drives in use, have done a study on how long they last.

Unfortunately they have only been going for about 5 years so that is as far
back as their figures go, but they extrapolate for longer periods.

Makes interesting reading.

Caution, they are referring to hard disks without enclosures/cases.

On their blog they have been asked to provide figures by manufacturer ­
which as far as I know they haven¹t done yet.
