I feel just the same as you Alastair, it was much faster with iOS 3 and iOS 5
certainly slows it down, especially when web browsing. My 5th gen. iPod touch
runs rings round it in the speed department.

If it's a 1st Gen iPad then it's probably just the more advanced iOS than it
shipped with making higher demands on the hardware than it was designed for.
All 1st Gen iPads I've used with iOS 6 have been much slower than iOS 5. I
don't think iOS 7 will run on a 1st Gen so that may be just the spe

This might just be my perception after using newer iOS devices but my original
