Yes, it did all that, said it was downloading then disappeared. I tried
again and this time it launched the installer so touch wood it all
worked. (Should have updated you, rather crazy day). But when I did
'reveal app' (command click in Raycast) it opened Applications - but
didn't show the ins
Did it redirect to system preferences > software update > then ask you if you
want to download macOS 11.4?

hmm, spoke too soon. It was cheerfully saying '24 minutes left' then
suddenly it just says my mac is up to date and no sign of the installer.
Is it hiding somewhere or did it delete itself?

I've had enough issues with Big Sur recently that I'd like to reinstall
it. There was a time when you could download an updater and run it. Now
all the advice I see assumes you want to zero your current install
