Suddenly the contacts on my iPad have doubled up. On the MacBook and the iPhone
there is still only one entry per name. I presume I've told the iPad to sync
twice but I can't work out how I did it and I can't work out a way of getting
rid of the extra set of names.

Did you tell the iPad to sync contacts through USB/iTunes as well as iCloud?
Have a look at the info tab of the iPhone sync settings in iTunes and see if
contact syncing is enabled.

I had a problem with emails duplicating. I got onto the Apple advisors: they
provide an online ichat service which I found surprisingly effective, and the
techies knew what they were doing and got it right. I suggest you contact them.
Click get started at this page:
Log into iCloud.com and see if the contacts are duplicated there, that will
tell you where the problem lies.
