It might be the cable but starting with my suggestions is the one where
you don't shell out cash needlessly;)
My iPhone was doing this but the same cable worked fine with the iPad so
it's worth a try (have since moved house so not sure which cable or USB
port it was on, seems not to happen now
Still think its the cable. ;-)

I've seen this with my iPhone. I'd suggest creating a new user on your
mac and plugging it in (also, try a new USB port). See if it recognises
it then. If so, it's not the cable;)
If not, check for dust and so on in the connector and see if anyone has
a spare.
