I have used nimh AA cells in my Hitec radios for 3 years and I'll never go back to nicads.
8 AA cells fit into a Radio Shack battery caddy, and that plugs right into a Hitec radio. Total cost = $22 at Kmart. The latest cells are 1800 mah. They last for at least 4 hours of flying on my Eclipse radio.
