Don't send no Boy or The September SVSS Contest by Juan Mota Years ago when I was involved in serious social intercourse (U.S. Infantry) I learned a curious card game called Hearts. With a very diverse group of players, the bravado ran amok with local sayings and terms. Only a few of them are fit for RCSE. When a player held a good hand, you could often hear the following phrase "Don't send no boy" It was both a bluff and a warning to play only your best hand. Today's Contest reminded me of that strange phrase. The SVSS site in Davis, California, is located about 100 miles east of San Francisco and 18.4 miles west of Sacramento. The 30 acres of grassland park is inhabited by burrowing owls, ground squirrels, hawks and on weekends some of the best TD pilots in Northern California. The Sept. Contest was your typical TD contest with the tasks of 4, 6, 8, 10, in any order with open winches. The weather was warm to hot and the thermals were everywhere. So were large bands of sink. SBSS, otherwise fondly know as the Mudflat Boyos, NBSS, CVRC, S 3 (Reno Thermal Mafia) and NBSS all sent some of their best. It was it was a contest to send your best. 45 came and enjoyed a near flawless contest and BBQ. The top ten were separated by just a few points. Mark Triebes took first flying a Millennium. Exact times and 90 plus landings were the norm. But before the TD contest we held the Western States electric Zagi championships. Oddly, the races were dominated by fast and maneuverable Twin Stars. We used PVC poles with streamers as the pylons and within 7 seconds everyone was laughing at the brightly colored Zagis being pursued and overrun by primmer gray Twin Stars. With that introduction, SVSS invites any and all Pilots to come fly with us on Sunday Sept. 12th when we host the Northern California Soaring League contest at our Davis Site.
