When using the foil/bubble wrap from HomeDepot there is an easy way to join the edges. Using a straight edge about 1/4 inch in from the edge, cut through one layer of foil. Then peel back the strip. You will then have some of the bubble plastic left where you peeled off the strip. Do that with the other edge you wish to join. Place the exposed plastic on the edges together and seal with a hot covering iron.

My explanation is not very elegant, sorry.  It's the best I can do today.
