Last weekend I got to see a Soprano, the RES plane distributed by Isthmus Models. It looks like an Ava, Danny or whatever, but as flown by Mark Nankivil, it gobbled up the Avas in the OVSS competition; it seemed to float just as well, and penetrated much better. It was not an RES day. The wind blew 8-12 knots all day, with turbulence and gusts. Mark worked weak lift way downwind several times, then cruised back to the field with no problems. The handling was very smooth in thermal circles and gusts, with none of the stop-and-go that some other RES planes exhibit. Several design wrinkles differentiate the Soprano from the other lookalikes; Mark Miller at Isthmus would be able to tell you what they are if you're interested.Taking into account the usual disclaimers that the pilot accounts for X% and so forth, I would still say that for those list members thinking about a modern RES, this relatively little-known plane seems to be well worth a look.
