Chicago SOAR had their first club contest of the season... 6 winches out with 4 or 5 man flight groups, seeded MoM with 4 rounds in the 10 to 12 range. Rapidly changing conditions made for an interesting day, actually almost perfect for a soaring contest.

What I found interesting is that some of our club newbies from last year have been outfitting with new gear and have been practicing or some other good stuff like that. Pat C. showed up with a "Stud Bug" that supposedly only weighed 38 oz. He downed some very good pilots and was right in there until the last round, hitting all his landings and everything. I remember him barely being able to get up a winch last year. A couple other guys too, our club is getting really deep with good pilots.

We also had Capn' Jack and Karen in, and Marc Gellart in from out of town. Both of these guys like to drop in to fly a little MoM and contest hard with the SOAR guys. I think Marc placed second (flying a complete round with a stripped out aileron servo, even doing a victory roll at the end! Of course he didn't realize it was stripped at the time 8-) ) I think Capn' Jack also placed in the top 5 with some typical strong flying.

Jim McCarthy won today with his new Sharon X tail. Ya Jimbo, keep telling me how you prefer 126" span models... I don't believe you anymore, you are a long wing convert now!

Steve Meyer and Genny brought a grill and had brats and burgers going on the field, they were celebrating their birthday this month. Thanks for all the food, that was great!

Some rain blew in and pushed us off the field before we were finished with fun flying, so we finished up the day at our favorite Mexican restaurant, had a few pitchers of Margs, ate big and laughed hard with friends. Just the way it ought to be.

8-)
