Fred, It seems to me that Joe already gave us a treat (and a beating) several years ago at the 2 Day Rose Bowl Soaring Festival. If I remember correctly he flew an EPP Foamie TG-3 to first place in 2M, and without any landing arrestor. Joe is a gentleman and an outstanding pilot. I have learned, and still learning, a lot from him. It has been said (tongue in cheek) Joe can thermal a brick. I believe it.

The overall winner at Visalia is generally considered to be the highest score in the unlimited category. That's certainly the way the trophies are presented. The reason for this is almost everyone participates in unlimited so there's many more contestants in unlimited than in any other class or even in all other classes combined. However, the overall winner or highest score obtained in the unlimited class is not necessarily the highest score achieved in the contest as it's not unusual for a two meter glider to outscore the unlimited gliders with the tricky landing tasks. Unfortunately, the only way the winner of the two meter class would be considered the overall winner is if he flew his two meter glider in the unlimited class. Maybe Joe will give us a treat next year by trying that scenario. An even more remarkable achievement is Mike Reagan also beating the overall winner while flying his AVA in the RES class. It's absolutely unbelievable that he was able to beat many of the best glider pilots in the country in a landing task that required extreme precision with an RES glider. Way to go Mike! Regarding your question about Grey Eagle participants, they appear to designated by an astrisks. Don McNamee finished second in RES with a score of 2448, so he won the Grey Eagle cup.
