Interesting.  I am using a typical Ford long shaft starter motor winch, 
usually without a retriever, and this weekend had two smallish split rings 
on swivels fail.  My chute ended up sorta sailing off and after one 
failure, for a moment, caught a thermal.  (!)  I'm revisiting this rigging 
issue, too.

Some folks don't use a chute but rather a strip of nylon braided strap with 
a couple of welded D rings stoutly sewn in.  Why use a chute?  What are the 
advantages of a chute over a braided nylon strap (or advantages of the 
nylon strap over the chute).  The strap seems like a perfectly useable 
device for launches and I've never seen one have a problem, but the only 
folks I've seen use them also use retrievers.

Any and all comments on things to put on the end of the winched tow line 
are welcome.
