them is a full NAT/
firewall & occasional VPN server for my home-office LAN, the other is
doing routing-only (firewall turned off) on a WISP with about 45
clients.

Actually things look ok in that respect, I took that picture before
touching things and after wiping the residue off the board looks ok,
while the part seems to have opened up and spewed the nice fan you see
there.

and put it back into use. Granted this may be a long shot, but it is
a whole lot better then tossing it in the trash!
