Hi Steve,
Yes, it does work after power-cycling the unit. I believe the
same functionality is achieved as using the CF-to-IDE adapter,
but without the adapter.

I have Transcend 266x CF card that didn't work with the net5501
as I e-mailed the list about a month ago.
I purchased a CF-to-IDE adapter and with that the same CF card worked!
Here came the idea: the adapter had a Master/Slave jumper, why not
hack one onto the net5501? I tried it and it work
